Middle School

St. Thomas’s International School has three middle school grades (grade 6, 7 and 8). This is based on the Italian public school format of prima, secondo and terzo. Students learn the Italian state Middle School curriculum and complete the public school examinations. However, students have additional hours of English teaching from a mother tongue English teacher  and most of the subjects are also taught in English such as History and Geography, Science, Physical Education, Music and Visual Arts. In grades 7 and 8 they have the opportunity to study for the Cambridge English examinations usually at B1, B2 or C1 level depending on the student. Spanish is taught as an additional language.

The subjects taught in Middle School are English language, Italian, Mathematics, Geometry, Science, STEM, History, Geography, Technology, Technical Drawing, Music, Visual Art and Art History, Physical Education and Spanish.

Interdisciplinary

As part of the curriculum all subjects focus on preparing the students for an interdisciplinary project twice a year. Subjects focus on connecting a topic to an overarching theme in each grade level. Using strategies like Visible Thinking Routines, teachers and students collaborate to develop relevant, meaningful and significant connections between subjects. This interdisciplinary approach to learning is critical for life long learning but also critical for their end of year public school examinations.
